British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
