Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
