Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
