The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
