An informant has revealed a parliamentary probe that the UK failed to secure confidential equipment permitting the militant group to locate Afghans who worked with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger

The source, known as Person A, testified that people concerned by the data leak were advised to change residences and switch their contact details to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

MPs are looking into the UK government's management of a serious leak of private information concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to relocate to Britain to flee militant rule.

How the Leak Happened

An electronic document with their personal data, such as names, addresses and occasionally family information, was mistakenly released by a worker working at British military command in February 2022.

The leak came to light in late 2023, when the names of nine people who had applied to move to Britain appeared on online platforms.

Consequences of the Data Breach

Preliminary research provided to the committee estimated that at least 49 family members and associates of people concerned by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction regarding the leak was implemented in August 2023 and prevented any information about it from being made public until mid-2025.

Security Recommendations

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the volunteer organization associated with told affected households they were supporting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate if they could and changed their contact details. Those were the crucial data that, if authorities obtained such data, would lead to them being traced,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The source contested that an official review conducted by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to determine that the possession of the records by the Taliban was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are in hiding from the authorities; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

The source explained terrible violence endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of young kids who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
