Adarabioyo, Cole Palmer, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Lavia all honed their skills within the City youth system, with most being coached by Enzo Maresca. Although a direct link was severed recently with the manager's dramatic departure from Chelsea, the tie persists strong as Sunday's interim manager, Calum McFarlane, previously held the role of under-18s assistant manager at the Manchester club.

"Our team contained an abundance of exceptional players," recalls ex-City teammate Ben Knight. "When you've got such a high number of world-class players, you just feel like you're never going to lose."

These five players have one key commonality: their pathway to Manchester City's first team was eventually obstructed. This reality highlights a key aspect of the club's financial strategy—producing and transferring academy graduates for significant profit. The transfer of Cole Palmer to Chelsea alone is said to have earned approximately £40 million for City.

A Pep Guardiola Schooling and Finding Creative Liberty

"Receiving a City education and then adding your own flair on it and playing with creative license has certainly helped Cole," continued Knight. "He was the kind of player that required a bit of liberty to be at his most effective... He's gone to Chelsea as the focal point; he can go where he wants and get on the ball and do what he wants. The move has worked out."

The main goal at Manchester City's academy is clear: to develop players for their own first team. To facilitate this, a specific stylistic and tactical structure is used, mirroring the philosophy of Pep Guardiola's team to make a seamless progression. Copying the Masters

The learning process often involves mimicry of the established stars. "I attempted to copy Bernardo Silva, McAtee would try to copy David Silva," Knight said. "The hardest thing is they're multi-million pound players and you're trying to take their position—that is really hard. It's almost next to impossible."

Palmer's own path nearly ended early at City, with certain at the club doubting whether the then small 16-year-old possessed the necessary qualities. "He experienced a mad growth spurt," Knight recalled. "And then Covid happened and he trained with the first team and it was like: 'Oh my God, how good is he now? He's just ridiculous.'"

Being a City graduate holds a certain cachet, and the quality of player developed is consistently impressive. Smart recruitment and excellent coaching ensure to maintain City's position at the forefront and make them the admiration of competitors. Their eagerness to spend in young talent, as seen with Lavia, Delap and Gittens, provides a clear edge.
