This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people shouting “six-seven” – originating from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
