Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
